I was thinking of keeping medium oak on stairs and continuing the upstairs hallways medium with matching wainscoting that the stairwell has and only keeping the bedrooms light. How would a dark floor look with the light coloured wood of the stairs. The main level flooring is original and we d like to put in a dark coloured hardwood or laminate. The home has medium oak throughout the first floor and stairs.

Other than a redo of the stain on the treads banister and posts your down to a carpet stair runner that pulls in colour from either the walls or the wood floor. The color of your wood does not protect it from water or moisture damage. Both light and dark hardwood floors offers a unique sense of style beauty and a timeless value to a home. Sadly the stain is too dark for the wood floors.

Wood will warp twist or rot when exposed to water or moisture. If you plan on using an area rug in the entrance way you could match your runner to the area rug for some form of cohesion. I m having a similar dilemma my girls want modern bedrooms upstairs with extra light wood floors. And i am oh so grateful that we didn t do our floors yet because this little lesson has taught me that i could never ever live with a whole house of dark wood floors whether they are ebony like my stairs or medium dark stained like i talked about doing in this post.
